Access to Information v. Digesting Data
this is the typical type of post that i write up, and then delete. i just didn’t feel like deleting today. read at your own discretion.

Hey Happy Fourth of July Everyone!! Woo-hoo!!
(insert active fireworks display here, in your mind)
my girl child just went to work, and i’m alone for the holiday, which is gonna be something. good or bad is yet to be determined, but it’ll be something
and while i’m sitting here deciding which direction to take, i can’t help but notice this pile of books around me.
for various reasons, i’ve acquired:
- the Professional Bar and Beverage Manager’s Handbook
- Purple Cow
- Permission Based Marketing – both by Seth Godin
- Online Makering Inside Out- a sitepiont offering. i also have another one from sitepoint . . . Â
- Build your own database driven websites using PHP and mySQL – which shouldn’t count because i bought that one two years ago. and i still just farm out the work to some programmer in the fallen USSR who charges $12 an hour now that he’s upped his rates.
- 1984 – George Orwell (fiction comes in wayy behind. it’s for vacations really)
- iWoz – steve wozniak bio, from Apple computers. super-geek, laughs a lot.
- Dan Harrington on Cash Games – Vol I and Vol. II
that’s enough. it’s a list of books that have either just landed, or i bought and never read. sure, there are bookmarks in them, generally in the first half, if not quarter of the book. having access to data isn’t what it’s all about. it might be the first step, so i’m not pulling out the wet noodle right now, but it’s no time to stop.
i’m not listing any of the poker books that landed here via comp point cash-ins either, fwiw.
i think it’s only worth mentioning because i have books with ragged edges from overuse. there are things that i’ve digested thoroughly, and use everyday. and somehow, if i sit and look at all of the poker knowledge i have access to, it’s just sitting there. not all of it, but simply signing up for something and watching some videos is like buying a book and getting through the first third.Â
being on TOP of it is a completely different thing. waiting for the next vid at my stakes, and being able to analyze it as though it were put out by a peer is on TOP. bitching that you need more info than just what they show you in the poker schools is being on TOP. (that’s btimm and baz, btw). me? i’m one step behind the guys that are a couple steps behind.Â
this can’t be a poker blog of value for most of the guys that stop by and read it, because i’m discovering stuff that they’ve already digested a year ago. it’s kindof like someone coming to me and saying “did you know if someone links to your website using certain keywords, you’ll rank better for those terms?” “Uh, yepper kiddo, i did know that. but don’t quit there, or else you’ll never make it”.
CARDS:
that all being said, i’m back to playing cards. and after the layoff, it’s all coming to me in a different way. it seems more like a puzzle than a game. so the desire to compete is turned down to almost nil. that turns down the tilt meter. i uh, recently replaced a monitor that died due to tilt. it was delivered some blows that weren’t fatal right away, but hastened the demise. those blows came about 18 months ago. there’s still a couple of marks on the wall from that time frame. i uh, i’ve been done with the mark making for some time.
i got in about 1k hands yesterday, 3 or 4 tabling. at first i sat down at some tables where my cbets on Kxx/Qxx boards were getting check/raised and i thought “looks like they read my playbook.  no need to stick around here”. and off i went to find a spot where i have position on some stack and half that bets 3 streets with middle pair.Â
i was taking notes on players, taking notes on things to look up later, and enjoying it all much more than i did when i was on auto-leak trying to get hands in.  in this mindset, i’m expecting july to be like january was. it’ll be more fun, and more engaging. and i’ll probably grow a lot more in poker understanding, and skills. so i’m kindof looking forward to it.
WHAT I’VE ACTUALY BEEN DOING:
P90 Masters routines and some weight loss. i’m down to 184 after a full night of eating and drinking last night. i made the world’s most awesome cheeseburger at 2 am. OMG was it fantastic!Â
i think the steady excercise takes the edge off, considering i’m not playing drums on stage regularly and i haven’t made a sunday hockey game in 8 weeks i’d bet. if i don’t do something, i get ornery.  i’ve dropped two belt sizes, and now i’m in a whole new wardobe that just happened to be sitting in boxes in the attic. yay. and i’m within striking distance to 179, which is nice to see on the scale, and the point at which the government no longer thinks i’m fat. lol.
my playing weight was 168, so i’m still 15lbs over that, and that won’t happen anytime soon. but if i get down into the 170’s that’ll be a worthy accomplishment. i’d be able to move my XXL collection into the attic and put them in those newly emptied boxes.
ok – i know i’ve done nothing but babble now for paragraphs. i’m off to cut the lawn, and then make some sort of relaxed use of the rest of the holiday – knowing that tomorrow is ANOTHER day off!! woo-hoo!!!!
