things change in a moment

it’s friday night, and i should be getting ready for the wave of activity that is the 100 year old local high school football rivalry, at home.  but, the rains came and washed it all away.  rescheduled for tomorrow, so there goes my blues band gig of the week.  and it leaves me here tonight with an open schedule.  maybe i’ll get things in enough order to actually see the desk under this pile of papers.

on a sad note, templar died.  he played goalie on the same team for years.  he used to ride to the games with me.  lanky fellow with a big wingspan.  challenged shooters and basically took away the whole net.  finished first in the league a couple of times with sub 2.00 GAA.  best goalie i had ever played against or with.

over the top red wings fan.  in fact, his constant high volume babble about them lead me way past irritated and straight to the promised land of full blown senseless hate for the team years ago.  i couldn’t bring myself to buy a cornell hockey jersey because it resembled a red wings jersey too much.  tonight, i don’t seem to hate them anymore.

he battled himself a lot.  he definitely should have been on emotional maintenance meds because he was never really comfortable with himself.  and it’d all fall apart on him in an instant, flying off the handle into a rage, or some sense of desperation in a moment, over the strangest things.  so he drank.  all day.  every day.  he’d stopped playing hockey with us a little under a decade ago, when it all became recreational and not bloodthirsty league play.  he stopped coming to the bar years ago, and that’s when i probably stopped keeping an eye on him.

he was doing poorly for a long time, so i can’t say i’m shocked.  but i still don’t find it easy to envision someone who was 37 having run their health all the way down to zero. but i guess that’s what happened.

heh, so tonight i change the blade on my stick.  and it’s time to buy some new ones, so i check online and now there are no Forsberg blades.  they’re Zetterberg blades (same config, different name).  out with the old, in with the new i guess.  even though Forsberg was at one time, the Best Player On Planet Earth.  someday i hope Claude Giroux takes over that title.

the flyers scrimmage the wings on wednesday.
